A bridge is a permanent prosthetic device that may be recommended if you are missing one or more teeth and are cemented onto the neighboring teeth. If left unfilled, the remaining teeth could shift or rotate to fill in the gap and may throw off your bite. The misaligned teeth could then cause a temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder or gum disease to develop.
A bridge can take two or more visits to the dentist to complete. Crowns are placed on the neighboring teeth, called abutments, to serve as anchors for the bridge. A fabricated tooth, called a pontic, will be attached to the crowns covering the abutments. But first, your dentist may make an impression of your teeth so that a custom bridge can be made that is perfect for you. A temporary bridge can be created to protect the abutment teeth in the meantime.
